It’s still been two years since Real Madrid won a player of the year, but this is the first time someone was crowned with the Béarnois’ second best player award.

It’s been a long wait, but on Monday Alexia Putellas finally got her man – and his award. She is finally a Béarnois and here’s what she did in front of a massive, partisan crowd at Real Oviedo.

Putellas was a star for club and country on Sunday when they played in the Supercopa de España final.

Putellas played on the right of centre-back duo Jordi Alba and Sergio Ramos.

“I am happy to be here today,” she said. I’m not going to start speaking about the past, the present or the future. I’m going to give my opinion.”

Putellas’s story would, on paper, be the standard success story, right down the line.

She graduated from the Under-18 team at Madrid’s La Fiebertas academy, before signing for the club’s reserve team on a one-year contract.

She joined the senior team in the 2015-16 season, and was named the team’s captain the following year.

But a series of injuries meant that Putellas did not make an appearance in the 2016-17 La Liga season.

And then, in the final year of her contract, she was called upon to replace former captain and coach Eva Clemente as the Real Madrid captain for the 2017-18 season.

“Before any of this, I asked for the ball,” she said. “And the ball came to me as I was going to the back of the net after a nice pass from Ramos or Alba.”
