A high school freshman had just finished his weekly training run to the school’s West Hills course with a group of co-workers when his car was struck from behind just as the bus his group was riding was crossing the street.

A 9-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy were killed. Two other students were critically injured.

“It’s horrible to see somebody go, but I have no words for you,” said John Stine, the late coach of the cross country team whose passing marked the beginning of a new era for the sport. “It’s a tragedy that we’re all going through.

“The coaches are the first ones that go, but the parents are going to be the hardest. There’s nothing you can do when the parents are going through that grief. They’re going to be there every day. There’s nothing you can do.”

A total of eight students were transported to the hospital after the crash, officials said.

Porter Ranch School District spokeswoman Susan Jobe said the eight students injured in the crash are in a critical condition with three patients in critical condition and three patients in serious condition. One student was in unstable condition, Jobe said.

The victims ranged in age from about 13
